The Struggling Artist

I believe that the concept of a struggling artist comes from the idea to overcome the perceptions of those that look upon the ones that dared to try and expose the truth. Sylvia Plath was one of those people that took that chance. We look at her today and point out that her gift was writing. Yesterday it was looked at as the result of her illness. She was mocked by higher authorities for her portrayal of the Holocaust. She was pitied when those learned about her controversial suicide. She is one of my most favored inspirations.

As a woman of her time, what she expressed in her journals were thoughts not common of her existence. When we read them today, it seems petty compared to what we've seen nowadays.

The power of suppression has put a burden on artists such as Plath. What they spent their lives doing was struggling to "deal" with their "complexities" of their identity.

Artists that are now famed after their deaths, dared to be individuals. They exposed feelings so raw and personal in depth with the finest detail. Why? Because humans cannot deny truth and we will fight to find it when we begin to understand what it is. These poets, painters, novelists and musicians alike have one thing in common; to share the beauty of truth-a mutual understanding of life.

It makes you wonder why they were suppressed. Ironic how most famed artists known today were outcasts of their time; branded with illnesses and mental complexities ruled out by insanity. Luck of the draw? Highly unlikely.

These artists may have not realized it then, but they were ultimately setting a foundation for the enlightenment of humanity.
